Volcan Azul farms were started on slopes of the Poás Volcano in the beginning of the 19th century, by Alejo C. Jiménez & Wilhelm Kahle in order to satisfy the demands of the European gourmet coffee market. Over a 100 years have passed since the inception, with the 4th and 5th generation descendants still carrying on the vision of their ancestors to produce some of the best coffee in the world.
Today the production process starts with the planting of coffee trees on highly fertile soil 1200 meters above sea level. Then the coffee is harvested and meticulously processed at the mill and finally ends with a strict preparation for export quality. Besides the development coffee, the family is very focused on the conservation of land and natural resources through the protection of natural rain forests. In fact 70-80% of the land owned by the family is allocated towards conservation and not utilized; they focus on growing high quality coffee in small volumes.
